YOGYAKARTA
Yogyakarta is the capital city of one among three Exclusive Regions in Indonesia, located in the south-central part of the island of Java. As the only Indonesian royal city still ruled by a monarchy, Yogyakarta is regarded as an important centre for classical Javanese fine arts and culture such as ballet, batik textiles, drama, literature, music, poetry, silversmithing, visual arts, and wayang puppetry. Renowned as a centre of Indonesian education, Yogyakarta is home to a large student population and dozens of schools and universities, including Gadjah Mada University, the country's largest institute of higher education and one of its most prestigious.[Learn more]
The Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace with its grand and elegant Javanese architecture, lies in the center of the city between the Winongo and Code Rivers. The palace grounds stretch from north to the south, in line with Mount Merapi, the Kraton is constructed to form a model of the Javanese conception of the cosmos. On each gateway, pavilion, and courtyard has a specific symbolic meaning, harmonizing the divine powers of the universe. Over 1,400 retainers serve the current sultan, and can be met throughout the palace.
This is one of Yogyakarta's "must-see-tour" which begins with a visit to the Soultan Palace where in some ways the current Soultan still rulling. A large part of the Palace is used as museum and holds an extensive collection, including gifts from European Monarchs and gilt copies of sacred heirlooms of the Royal family.
Visit also Taman Sari or fragrant garden which was once a splendid pleasure park of the Royal family members. Then continue your tour to a local leather handcraft workshop, a Batik home industry, and a silversmit workshop in Kota Gede. Yogyakarta is a noted center of these fine crafts and most galleries welcome visitors to observe traditional Javanese craftsmen on working.
After lunch at a local restaurant, return to your hotel and the tour ends here.
